Intransigent Wench: Exploring the Taboo, Redefining Power, and Embracing Wholeness

This series is about stepping boldly into the unspoken and taboo, peeling back the layers of judgment, discomfort, and misunderstanding that have surrounded Black women for generations. Intransigent Wench dives deep into how Black women have navigated the intersection of sexuality, power, and identity—unearthing the complexities, challenges, and triumphs that define their stories.

This isn’t a conversation about what’s palatable or polished; it’s about leaning into the uncomfortable and exploring the full spectrum of Black womanhood. From the parts that have made us outcasts, to the aspects that have brought us power and joy, this series celebrates the wholeness of Black women.

What This Series Covers:

We’re connecting with writers, artists, and women who dare to delve into the topics most people avoid—shedding light on the experiences, politics, and narratives around sexuality and identity.

• The Taboo and Unconventional: We’ll sit with women who have lived and worked in spaces that society often deems taboo—exotic dancers, women who have engaged in sex work, and those in nontraditional relationships. These are stories of resilience, agency, and power in spaces often misunderstood or vilified.

• The Liberated and Exploratory: On the other side, we’ll amplify the voices of women who embrace their sexuality unapologetically—self-proclaimed freaks, women who find freedom and power in sexual liberation, and those who celebrate intimacy and pleasure, whether with a partner or themselves.

• A Journey to Wholeness: Throughout this exploration, we’re not just talking about sex—we’re talking about power, identity, and what it means to embrace the fullness of who you are. This series challenges judgment and respectability politics, holding space for stories that are raw, real, and transformative.

Why It Matters:

Black women’s sexuality has long been a site of judgment, misrepresentation, and exploitation. Yet, it is also a source of immense power, healing, and freedom. Intransigent Wench is about reclaiming those narratives, redefining what it means to be whole, and exploring how Black women’s relationship with their bodies and desires shapes their sense of self.

By diving into the taboo and unspoken, this series aims to shift the narrative. It’s about honoring the diversity of Black women’s experiences, the ways they’ve navigated societal judgment, and the courage it takes to live fully and authentically.
